4 Places To Check out in Amsterdam-Noord

There's Amsterdam, and then there's Amsterdam-Noord, the part of the city that many travelers tend to dismiss. Only a 15 minute ferry ride away, the once abandoned location is quickly becoming an artistic haven. Even the big dogs like MTV and Red Bull have planted roots in Amsterdam Noord. In its past life, it was an industrial area of shipyards and tolling stations, but now the abandoned warehouses and hangars are an oasis of creativity and a hangouts for the cool kids. Rent a bike, hop on a ferry from Amsterdam Centraal Station, and check out these cutting-edge yet charming parts of Amsterdam-Noord.


1.  Street Art Murals

Perhaps one of the coolest parts of Amsterdam-Noord is the street art. On the side of the NDSM Wharf building, there's a  long stretch of graffiti murals by artists from all walks of life. Every now and then, you may be able to catch an artist in the midst of creating a masterpiece.




2. NDSM Wharf | Tt. Neveritaweg 61, 1033 WB Amsterdam, Netherlands

Formerly a shipyard, the converted building houses talented artists of all media. The expansive space can be explored for free by foot, or even bike. The outside terrain hosts various block parties, festivals and markets. Stroll around and check out some of the work and chat with the artists.




3. Pllek  | TT Neveritaweg 59, Amsterdam-North, 1033 WB Amsterdam

This enormous restaurant, made completely of shipping containers is a great chill out spot on a nice afternoon. It has tons of upstairs and downstairs seating, as well as an outdoor area with a beach-like view, sand and all. While the restaurant/bar is definitely a prime hangout for hipsters and hipsters at heart, the food options are debatable for some. Most come for hours of conversation and cocktails with amazing views of the IJ River. The place gets pretty packed on weekends so expect make sure you have time to spare when visiting. 




4. Noorderlicht Cafe | Tt. Neveritaweg 33, 1033 WB Amsterdam

Another hipster haven, Norcelicht can be identified as the restaurant that looks something like a greenhouse. A hangout for many of the NSDM Wharf artists, you can find people hanging out having a beer while relaxing on the grassy areas surrounding the restaurant. The menu consists of seasonal and regional fare as well as organic options. It's definitely an eclectic mix of funky cool kids, so if you're into that type of scene, you should definitely stop by for a drink or three.
